Fighting the Super Bugs

1 Mar 2004

"I am always impressed with the wide-ranging and innovative use that plastics can be put to. One that recently caught my eye was the effort being made by UK company, Addmaster, in the combating the hospital superbug MRSA."

"MRSA has been regularly in the headlines of late/ Concerns have prompted World Health Organisation meetings, while here in the UK the government has appointed "bug-buster tsars" in a call to arms against poor hygiene practices. It is estimated that in Britain alone 100,000 people a year acquire some kind of infection while in hospital, costing the National Health Service around £1bn. Approximately 8% of these contact the potentially deadly MRSA bacteria."
"Addmaster's masterbatch works by inhibiting the multiplication of microbes thus reducing their populations. At relatively low doses that non-organic antimicrobial has shown a dramatic reduction in MRSA on plastic substrate. Its patented release on demand system also means that it offers excellent anti-wash characteristics. Applications are numerous, from hospital flooring to medical gowns to pens and clipboards. Not surprising then that the product is currently responsible for a sizable and growing portion of Addmaster's business."
